“Mirror,
mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?”
I’m sure you all can remember this line from
the fairy tale Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. In the fairy tale Snow
White’s wicked stepmother, the
Queen asked “who was the fairest of them all?”
However rather than
asking who is the
fairest (or most beautiful) of them all, what
if the question asked was
a reflection of
true beauty, “who is the most righteous of them all?”
Beauty in the Bible is focused in inner beauty and it is most often defined as doing what is right. Righteousness is defined as acting or being in accordance with what is just or honorable; free from guilt or wrong; upright; virtuous; noble; moral; ethical. Doing what pleases God is true beauty.
Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight." - I Peter 3:3-4, NIV
Seek to please the One who matters most.
If you’re searching for true beauty, strive to be more righteous. To be righteous is to match our lives with God’s commandments, love and purposes. This action is based on love for God and a relationship with God. God’s Word is the standard by which we measure right and wrong. It’s not enough to just know the Word, we must obey God’s Word.
What happens when you look in the mirror and notice that your hair is out of place? You correct it, right? Well the same should happen when you look into the mirror of God’s Word and notice that your life is not aligned with His will.
Just as you would reach for your comb to take corrective action to get your hair in order, you must take corrective action to eradicate the sin that’s been allowed to invade your life.
“For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.” – James 1:23-25 NLT
For true beauty, don’t strive for overnight perfection as that will only create unnecessary disappointments. Your goal each day should be to sin less today than you did yesterday.
As Christians, our proper reaction to the Word is reflected in an obedient life. Just as an image of you is reflected back as you look into a mirror, a righteous lifestyle (not a perfect lifestyle) should be reflected as you look into the mirror of God’s Word.
You cannot likely imagine looking at yourself in the mirror, then walking away only to forget what you look like. So don’t ignore the things that God has shown you are out of place in your life.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with being different from the crowd. In fact, we should be set apart. We are called to be Holy. Holy does not mean perfect, it means to be set apart for use by God. As Christians we are called to live a Holy life.
“For it is written: be holy because I am holy.” – I Peter 1:16 NIV
