Jealousy is an emotion that consists of negative thoughts and feelings and it usually arises out of some perceived fear. Not only is the command “do not fear” repeated numerous times throughout the Bible, we are also taught that we have not been given a spirit of fear.
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” - 2 Timothy 1:7
Though jealousy is something we’ve all likely struggled with at some point in our lives, as Christians we are taught not to fear and to think on positive things.
“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable -if anything is excellent or praiseworthy - think about such things.” - Philippians 4:8
For this reason we must learn how to conquer jealousy. Learning how not to be jealous may take some work but it’s definitely worth the effort. Overcoming jealousy is necessary because much like unforgiveness, it holds you hostage. Here are a few tips for overcoming jealousy that I have found to be helpful.
Confess it - Yes God already knows when you’re harboring feelings of jealousy but confessing it helps you because you’re acknowledging it. Confess it and ask God to help you overcome it.
Don’t compare - Comparison is the death of contentment.
Be thankful - You may not have everything you want, but you can be thankful for what you have.
Put your faith into action - Prepare to receive the blessings to come. Do what you can do and allow God to do what He does best.
Don’t allow jealousy to control you. Use these tips for overcoming jealousy and learn how to live a life of contentment.
