Sexual Purity

Yes, it seems the world is obsessed with sex. However, the Christian single woman should not be. We are to live a life of Christian purity. Sexual purity is a large part of living a life of purity, so let’s talk about what that means.

Sexual purity means saying no to sexual intercourse, oral sex and even sexual touching until you’re married. It means saying no to a physical relationship that causes you to be ‘turned on’ sexually. It means refraining from looking at pornography, listening to music, watching television shows, movies or even participating in conversations (ANYTHING) that feed sexual thoughts.

So often it seems many Christians believe abstaining from sex until marriage is just to spoil your fun, but just like all of God’s commands, it is for our protection.

Look, God created sex. His first command to Adam and Eve was to have sex.

"So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply..." - Genesis 1:27-28 NLT

However, He created it with specific purposes in mind. The purpose of sex is:
• Procreation - to create life (Gen. 1:26-28; 2:18-25)
• To bond a husband and wife together (not boyfriend and girlfriend or even a fiancée’) (Gen 2:24)
• To be enjoyed within marriage (Prov. 5:18-19; Song of Sol. 5:10-16)

So, if we know the purposes for sex only relate to those who are married, we only cheapen it (and ourselves) by engaging in sex before marriage.

Let’s look at this from a different approach…
Your birthday is a special day for you, right? So, let’s say we agreed to celebrate it every day…sounds great, right?

Now let’s say your friends call and want to go to the mall…
No, remember we’re celebrating your birthday so you’ve got to get ready

Let’s say your friends call and want to go to the movies…
No, remember we’re celebrating your birthday so you’ve got to get ready

Let’s say, your friends call and want to go to a basketball game…
No, remember we’re celebrating your birthday so you’ve got to get ready

Let’s say, your friends want to go to a concert…
No, remember we’re celebrating your birthday so you’ve got to get ready

Ok, this goes on for 365 days, the only thing you’ve done is celebrate your birthday. Now when your birthday actually arrives, what do you do? Same old thing? Probably not, you’re tired of it because you’ve been celebrating your birthday everyday for a year.

You see, it’s no longer special…it’s no longer a big deal because you’ve gutted the meaning and pleasure out of it. That’s what we do with sex if we engage in it outside the boundaries of marriage (it loses its beauty and uniqueness). By engaging in sex before marriage, you end up cheating yourself of sex at its best.

Look the truth of the matter is, everybody is not doing it and even if they were that doesn’t make it right. God’s Word said He will not withhold any good thing from us (Psalm 84:11).

Ok, here’s another example…
Let’s say I had a $20 bill and a $100 bill to give away and I gave you the $20 bill. Do you think you got the better deal?
No? Now what if I told you the $100 bill is a counterfeit, do you still think you got the raw end of the deal?

You see, although the world makes sex outside of marriage look good, sex before marriage is a counterfeit because God made sex for marriage.

Sex ruins your ability to make accurate decisions in a dating situation. Also, abstaining from sex until marriage is one of the ways God protects you. Sex should only be experienced between a married couple.

"The husband should fulfill his wife’s sexual needs, and the wife should fulfill her husband’s needs. The wife gives authority over her body to her husband, and the husband gives authority over his body to his wife." - 1Cor. 7:3-4 NLT

As you strive for sexual purity, consider the gift you would like to give your husband, the one God has chosen just for you. I know re-gifting has become a popular trend, but do you want to give your husband a used gift or something you’ve reserved just for him?
