As I was sitting in church listening to the choir sing
“I am what You see” by Bishop Paul S. Morton a famous quote
by Helen Keller
came to mind, “The only thing worse than being blind is having sight
but no vision.”
Now this is a beautiful song filled with
hope and encouragement that suggests limitless possibilities,
yet I thought of limitations.
Why you ask? Because
I thought of
recent conversations and emails from single woman who just seem to be
blinded by singleness. They have sight, but are unable to see
who they are in Christ because they can’t get beyond the fact that they
just happen to be single at the moment.
So many single women seem to be unnecessarily living depressed and
defeated lives. Some are struggling with the fact that
they’re still single while it appears that everyone around them is
married. Some are questioning if it’s actually God’s will for
them to be married. Others are placing their lives on hold
until their husband arrives. Some wonder if God can really
forgive them for having sex outside of marriage. The list
goes on and on.
However, we must remember that we’re not our past sins or our problems; we are the righteousness of God. We truly underestimate who we are in Christ. Yes, we’re single but we’re also:
• made in the image of Christ
(Genesis
1:27),
• fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm
139)
• His child and joint heir with Christ
(Rom 8:14-17)
• His chosen people and a royal
priesthood (I Peter 2:9)
• His workmanship (Ephesians 2:10)
• His disciple (Matt 28:19-20)
just to name a few! Ultimately, you have a choice to
make. Will you choose to believe your fickle feelings or a
triumphant Christ? The choice is yours.
Be confident in who you are in Christ. And guess what,
confidence attracts Christian single men. Many single women
are defeating themselves. When you walk around sad
and depressed it is actually a turn off to men, so while you’re hoping
and praying for a husband you may actually be sending a completely
different message.
Recognize the jewel that you are and enjoy life with great anticipation
of the blessings to come. Review the words of this song and
allow them to penetrate your heart. Make it your prayer to
God. Ask Him to help you see yourself as He sees you.

Help me to see me
the way You see me
sometimes I see pain Lord
when You see victory
I see where I am Lord
You see where I shall be
open my eyes, help me believe
I am what You see
You see me victorious
You see me faithful
You see me believing
that You are able
You see me rejoicing
cause I have survived
open my eyes, help me believe
I am what You see
Don’t allow
singleness to blind you any longer.
Confess those negative feelings to God and ask Him to remove
the blinders from your
eyes so you can see you the way He sees you and live the abundant life
He intended even now during your season of singleness.
